HAVERHILL — Mr. Paul H. Daniels, 85, of Ft. Myers, Fla., and formerly of Haverhill and Nashua, and Lexington, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010 in Ft. Myers, Fla.
He was educated in the Haverhill Public Schools System, graduating with the class of 1943. In May of 1943, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, entering the Aviation Cadet Program. After basic training, he was sent to Aerial Gunnery School, eventually serving as a tail gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress, which included a stint with the 8th Air Force flying out of England. Returning from the war, his education continued with attendance at Knox College Galesburg, Ill., Bryant & Stratton and Emerson College. He initially became an announcer for WHAV, in Haverhill, also WLLH Lowell and WWNH Rochester, where he eventually became Program Director.
After 8 years, he left radio broadcasting and became a Life Underwriter for Mass Mutual Insurance Co. of Andover. He then began a Newspaper Career at the Haverhill Gazette in late 1957 in the Advertising Dept., first in Public Relations and, in 1958, became Retail Advertising Manager. As time passed, he became advertising manager and, eventually, Director of Sales and Marketing. After leaving the Gazette, he became the Advertising Director of the then independently owned Brockton Enterprise until his retirement in 1989.
Paul was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, John Greenleaf Whittier Haverhill Chapter Order of DeMolay, and 50-year member of the Humane Lodge F& AM #21 of Rochester, N.H., Lodge Council Chapter Valley of Portsmouth, Dover, Member of Consistory Valley of Nashua 32 degree Mason of Ancient Accepter Order of Scottish Rite, a Shriner and member of the Hospitality Unit of Araba Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Ft. Myers, Fla., Past President of Haverhill Kiwanis Club, Past President of Metro South Chamber of Commerce, Active in Brockton Kiwanis Club, active in Capital Drives in Mass South Shore for fund-raising for YMCA, United Way, and other organizations, and a former corporator of the Pentucket 5 Cents Savings Bank, served on the Board of Directors for the New England Advertising Executive Association and voted life member, the National Advertising Executive Association, and the United States Tennis Association.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid boater and, for many years, active in the United States Power Squadrons. He loved and often visited the mountains and ski trails of New England, the West and the Alps.
His survivors include his wife, Marjorie R. (Parkhurst) Daniels of Mt. Myers, Fla.; son, David R. Olsson of Woburn; three daughters, Vicki Lynn and her husband John Colcord of Hampstead, Landra Lee and her husband Richard Mahoney of Hudson, N.H., Marcia K. and her husband Steven Gieryn of Fort Worth, Texas; six grandchildren, Kristen and Karel Olsson of Woburn, Gregory and Kimberly Colcord of Hampstead, N.H., Chelsea and Max Mahoney of Hudson, N.H.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation will be Saturday, July 23, 2011 at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, from 10:30 to 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:15 a.m. at the funeral home. Condolences to his family may be made at www.farmerfuneralhomes.com.
