Sandown, NH - Robert MacKinnon passed away on Wed., Oct. 16, 2019, after a long battle with congestive heart failure. Lovingly referred to as "Red," he was the sweetest, most kind man with the greatest integrity and best sense of humor right to the very end.
Red was born on Nov. 6, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Marion Whitcomb Burns. He grew up in Detroit, Mich., moving to Toronto, Canada, Walpole, Mass., and Wrentham, Mass., before building his life in Sandown, N.H. He was an Army and Navy veteran serving in the 1950s and 1960s. He worked many different occupations and could do anything he put his mind too. A master carpenter, owner of Quality Asphalt in the 1970s, Mechanical Engineer at the Sheraton, and retired as Maintenance Engineer from Rockingham County, N.H.
Red is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lois Ann MacKinnon; his sister, Jean Marlow of Md.; daughter Susan Padden and husband Ernest Brown of Sandown; daughter Donna Taylor and husband Bill Taylor of Deltona, Fla.; grandchildren Stephen and Jeremy MacKinnon of Kissimmee, Fla.; John and Dana Padden, Joshua and Brandy Padden, Shayna Padden, all of Sandown; step-grandchildren Katie and Derek Johnson of Sandown; Ben and Samantha Brown of Plaistow; and Suzy and Bill Sherman of South Boston. He leaves behind 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and close friend Bob Nickerson.
Red will be remembered wearing his train hat around town and for his love of cars. His signature 1933 Ford Truck has been seen for many years and in many parades. He enjoyed his daily "route" of visits while getting the mail! He was a wealth of knowledge for his family and could fix anything. His family will always cherish memories including skating, skiing, restoring antique automobiles, building model trains, producing some of the finest theater in Sandown, and rowing on the pond with all the kids and their friends. "Pa" will be missed by all and forever in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.
Friends and relatives who would like to honor Red are invited to a graveside service to be held at 11:30 a.m., Tues., Oct. 22, 2019, at the Sandown Center Cemetery (Main St. in Sandown, N.H., behind the library, or across from the fire station). Followed by a Celebration of Life at Zorvino Vinyards (226 Main St. in Sandown, N.H.) at 12 p.m.
